Ausbildung in Germany: Paid Vocational Training as an Alternative to University (2026)

A university degree isn't the only route to a good career in Germany. What if you could learn a recognized profession and get paid from day one? That's exactly what Ausbildung is — Germany's famous dual vocational training (duale Ausbildung), combining a vocational school with paid on-the-job training at a company.

For many young Vietnamese, this is the more practical door: moderate German requirements, income right away, and a bridge to long-term residence.

🎯 How Does the Dual Ausbildung System Work?

The heart of the duale Ausbildung is the word "dual": you learn in two places at once. Part of your time is spent at the Berufsschule (vocational school) for theory, the rest directly at the Betrieb (company) for hands-on practice — and you're paid for that part.

The rhythm alternates: a few days at school and a few at the company each week, or in blocks (Blockunterricht). At the end you take an exam, with the qualification certified by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) or the Chamber of Crafts (HWK) — a credential recognized across Germany.

Because you need enough German for the vocational school and to communicate at work, look ahead at the German levels A1–C2 to see which level you'll need.

💶 Ausbildungsvergütung: How Much Do You Earn?

Unlike university students, who usually fund themselves, trainees receive an Ausbildungsvergütung (training wage) from the very first year — and it rises every year.

Training yearMonthly pay (gross, estimated)
Year 1about €1,000–1,100
Year 2about €1,100–1,200
Year 3about €1,200–1,300

These are reference figures that vary by sector and region — check the exact amount in your contract and at an official source (IHK, trade union). These are gross figures; after tax and social contributions, take-home pay is a little lower.

🩺 Popular Ausbildung Fields for Vietnamese

Some fields are especially open and urgently seeking newcomers:

FieldExample professions
Nursing / Care (Pflege)Pflegefachkraft, elderly care
Hotel / Hospitality (Gastronomie)chef, hotel and restaurant roles
Mechatronics (Mechatronik)mechatronics and industrial technician

⚖️ Ausbildung or Studium? An Honest Comparison

There's no absolute "better" — only what fits you better:

CriterionAusbildungStudium (University)
Duration2–3.5 years3–5 years or more
Income while studying✅ paid right away⚠️ usually self-funded
Hands-on focus✅ very high⚠️ more theoretical
Specializationone specific tradebroader foundation
Qualificationvocational certificate (IHK/HWK)Bachelor's/Master's

Ausbildung's biggest advantage is a fast, secure route to the goal: you get a profession, income, and real experience early. In return it's more specialized than a university degree — if you aim for research or roles that require an academic title, university is the better fit.

🪪 Visa & Residence: §16a AufenthG

Germany has a dedicated residence permit for vocational training under §16a AufenthG (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Berufsausbildung). You apply for this visa based on a signed Ausbildung contract with a company.

During training you're usually allowed to work a limited number of extra hours. More importantly, after finishing you can normally stay to work in the profession you trained in, and later move toward permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis) once you meet the conditions.

> 💡 Note: Rules on side-job hours, post-graduation stay, and switching your residence purpose change over time. Always check with the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners' office) and an official source before deciding.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What German level do I need to start an Ausbildung? Usually B1–B2. Nursing and customer-facing trades often require B2; ask the company and the vocational school for specifics.

Is an Ausbildung really paid? Yes. This is the big difference from university: you receive an Ausbildungsvergütung from the first year (about €1,000–1,300/month) that rises annually.

Can I work in Germany after my Ausbildung? Usually yes. After finishing you may stay to look for and take a job in the profession you trained in, working toward long-term residence — depending on the current rules.

Can I still go to university after an Ausbildung? Possibly. A vocational qualification plus work experience can open university access in many federal states, even without a German Abitur.
