Free timeline, checklist and interactive tracker for studying in Germany — APS, TestAS, uni-assist, finance and visa, for international students.

How studying in Germany works

  1. Learn German and, where required, obtain an APS certificate (mandatory for applicants from countries such as Vietnam and China).
  2. Take the TestAS (for the Bachelor/Studienkolleg route) and a German-language exam (TestDaF/DSH/telc C1 Hochschule).
  3. Apply to universities, usually through uni-assist, by the intake deadline.
  4. Prove your finances, typically with a blocked account (Sperrkonto); the required amount changes yearly.
  5. Get health insurance and apply for the German student visa with the full application packet.
