Steuer-ID & Tax Numbers in Germany: What They Are, When You Get Them, and What For
A few weeks after arriving in Germany, a letter from the tax office lands in your mailbox carrying an eleven-digit string of numbers. What is this number, and why does every employer ask for it? It's the steuerliche Identifikationsnummer (tax identification number), usually shortened to Steuer-ID or IdNr — one of the most important numbers in German daily life.
This article explains what the Steuer-ID is, how it differs from the Steuernummer and the Sozialversicherungsnummer, when you receive it, and what you need it for.

🪪 What Is the Steuer-ID?
The Steuer-ID is an 11-digit number, assigned once and yours for life — even if you move, change jobs, or leave Germany and return. It does not change and is never reissued; each person has exactly one.
Its purpose is to identify you uniquely to the tax authorities. When you start a job — including a Minijob or Werkstudent role — your employer needs the Steuer-ID to calculate and withhold wage tax (Lohnsteuer) correctly. Without it, you may be taxed at the highest bracket (Steuerklasse VI) until you supply it.
🔀 Three Numbers: Don't Mix Them Up
Vietnamese students often confuse three numbers. They serve three different purposes:
| Number | Used for | Trait |
|---|---|---|
| Steuer-ID (IdNr) | personal tax identity, jobs | 11 digits, lifelong, fixed |
| Steuernummer | filing taxes, freelancing | issued by Finanzamt, can change |
| Sozialversicherungsnummer | social security when employed | for pension & insurance |
In short: the Steuer-ID belongs to you and never changes; the Steuernummer belongs to your tax file at the local Finanzamt and can change when you move regions or start self-employed activity; the Sozialversicherungsnummer relates to pension and social insurance and appears once you take insured employment.
🗓️ When Do You Get the Steuer-ID?
You don't apply for the Steuer-ID — it's generated automatically after you complete your Anmeldung (address registration). The usual sequence:
- You do the Anmeldung at the Bürgeramt.
- The data is forwarded to the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern (BZSt).
- After about 2–3 weeks, the letter with your Steuer-ID arrives at your registered address.
So make sure your name is on the mailbox/doorbell — BZSt post isn't easily forwarded. If you need the number urgently (to start a job) before the letter arrives, you can ask the Finanzamt for it.
💼 What Do You Need the Steuer-ID For?
| Situation | Steuer-ID needed? |
|---|---|
| Starting a job (including Minijob) | ✅ Required, for payroll |
| Tax return / refund | ✅ Yes |
| Opening a bank account | ⚠️ Often requested |
| Child benefit (Kindergeld) | ✅ For parent and child |
| Anmeldung (address registration) | ❌ No — number comes after |
The most important case for students is starting a job: the moment you sign a contract, your employer asks for the Steuer-ID to run payroll. And if you later want to claim back overpaid tax, the Steuer-ID is the first thing you'll enter.
> 💡 Tip: When the BZSt letter arrives, photograph it and save the Steuer-ID on your phone alongside a scan. You'll enter it many times — and digging out the original sheet wastes time.
🛟 What If You Lose Your Steuer-ID?
Don't panic. Because the number is fixed, you can always retrieve it — you won't get a new one:
- Check old documents: the Steuer-ID appears on your payslip (Lohnabrechnung), tax assessment (Steuerbescheid), and the original BZSt letter.
- Request it again from the BZSt: via the online form on the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern website; for data-protection reasons they send the number by post to your registered address — not by email or phone.
- Timing: usually up to a few weeks — so don't wait until just before your job starts.
Note: the Finanzamt won't give the Steuer-ID to strangers over the phone. Be wary of emails/texts asking you to "verify your tax number" — these are usually scams.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Steuer-ID and Steuernummer the same? No. The Steuer-ID is your personal, 11-digit, lifelong number. The Steuernummer is issued by your local Finanzamt for your tax file and can change when you move regions or freelance.
Do I have a Steuer-ID if I'm only studying and not working? Yes. Everyone who registers their address receives a Steuer-ID after the Anmeldung, whether or not they work.
What if I start a job but don't have my Steuer-ID yet? You can still work, but you may be temporarily taxed at the highest bracket (Steuerklasse VI). Once you supply the number, overpaid tax is usually corrected or refunded.
Does the number change if I move to another city? No. The Steuer-ID stays with you for life. Only the Steuernummer (tied to the Finanzamt) can change when you move regions.
