TestDaF Structure 2026: Digital and Paper-Based Formats

TestDaF still has two official formats: digital and paper-based. Both assess Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking, but they use different tasks. Check the format shown during registration and prepare with materials made for that version.

The paper-based Speaking section is not a face-to-face interview. In Listening, the third recording is played twice; the first two are played once.

Scores and Results

Each skill is reported separately as TDN 3, TDN 4, or TDN 5. Digital TestDaF also reports 0-20 points per skill: 5-9 is TDN 3, 10-15 is TDN 4, and 16-20 is TDN 5. Many programs require TDN 4 in all four skills, but the university's published rule controls.

Digital results are normally available in about 3 weeks; paper-based results in about 6 weeks. Fees vary by country and test center, so check the booking portal instead of relying on a single euro figure.
