Winter or Summer Intake in Germany? Which Semester to Choose (2026)

German universities admit students twice a year: the winter semester (Wintersemester) starts in October and the summer semester (Sommersemester) in April. Choosing the right start affects which programs you can apply to, how stiff the competition is, and even your visa timeline.

This article helps you decide which intake fits your situation.

🎯 Why Winter Is the Default Intake

Most programs — especially first-year Bachelor's — admit only or mainly in the winter semester. That's when all the introductory modules run, with the most orientation weeks (Orientierungswoche) and the largest cohort of new students.

If you're starting a Bachelor's or a competitive field, default to winter and plan backward from the 15 July deadline.

📌 When the Summer Intake Makes Sense

Downsides: fewer programs, some required modules may not line up, and you may start "out of phase" with your cohort.

Note: many universities set their own (earlier) deadlines for international applicants or run several rounds. Always check the dates on the university's page and on uni-assist.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What if I miss the 15 July deadline? You'll usually have to wait for the next intake. Some universities release leftover places (Restplätze) later, but don't count on it.

Is the summer intake easier to get into? Not necessarily — fewer applicants, but also fewer programs. For some Master's, a summer place is genuinely easier to secure.

Will my visa be ready if I'm admitted close to the start date? Book your visa appointment as early as possible, as soon as you have the offer (or even before). Processing can take several weeks.

When should I start preparing? 9–12 months before the deadline: enough time for language exams, certified translations, APS, and the blocked account.
